The Unexpected Heroes

Frankly, what caused many of us gathered around the computer screen watching the unfolding drama in the Hudson River in New York to barely hold back the tears was the sight of the commercial ferry boats springing into action and going straight to the scene to rescue the passengers, before even the official fireboats arrived.

During the afternoon press conference yesterday, the supervisor of those ferries was the person most overcome with emotion since he and his crews were the first to get there and among the first to meet the passengers who were overflowing with gratitude for coming so quickly as they stood on the wings of the jet. The sight of the commercial ferries coming from all parts of the river to rescue them gave them hope they were going to make it home. And they all will.

I have been trying to find a photo of what I saw online at MSNBC live - not just one ferry boat - but several, encircled around the down plane out in the middle of the Hudson River, like sentries guarding the rescued.
