Monday Night at the Cafe: Inaugural Eve

We're pouring the chai and the butterbeer and a bottle of Old Ogden's Fire Whiskey tonight as we prepare for one of the great miracles that the world has ever known - the peaceful transfer of power in the United States of America. It truly is amazing, the one president just packs up all his boxes and the next one comes in and picks out the drapes. And then we party all day and all night in celebration. And the world watches in amazement, having witnessed our campaigning and how we daily tear one another down only to come together tomorrow as Americans first.

Why, even the Middle East called a cease fire.

So gather around the tables, toast the new and the old, and enjoy the cream pies and popcorn. It's Inaugural Eve at the Cafe. God bless America.

An inspiring musical lineup except for Don Ho. What's with the lolo who stole my pakalolo?
I reluctantly admit I know that song, but was wondering why you included it. Perhaps a reference to what the voters were infuenced by?

Well, that was a bit on the inside. The Don Ho song was a big hit song in Hawaii when Barack (and I) were teenagers in the 1970s. It was played on the local radio a lot.

My favorite part is "One day I awoke there was knocking on my door. I said, "Ey! Go away!" But they only pound some more. I opened the door to tell 'em where to go - a man pulled a badge and "Eh, we from 5-0."

Well that explains it. I asked my husband (mainland haole boy) if he knew the song and he just gave me a blank look. So I must have been listening along with you and Barry when I lived there. It's definitely not in my stack of old hula records!

Brings back memories, doesn't it, Ralinda? ;-) I still remember the night of my prom - I mean, how many people have their prom in Waikiki? But anyway, my date (who drove us in a VW bus to the hotel - I was in heaven!) along with our gang went trolling through Waikiki after the prom and ended up at a nightclub were the Alii's (sp?) were playing. Don Ho was sitting in the audience and was called up to the stage where he sang a few songs - including Tiny Bubbles, of course - and Who is the Lolo. We all sang along.
