Can we truly say "I have no need of you?" No, not even if that person is expelled from the fellowship - the separation is to bring repentance and restoration, not to cast them into the fire.
And that repentance includes our own.
And yet, and yet - we shun our adversaries as though to cast those with whom we profoundly disagree into the fire, saying with contempt, "I have no need of you."
As though we had the authority to do so! Which, in all God's wisdom, we do not, for should we have such authority - would we not cast one another into the fire?
Correction is done in kindness with mercy and grace and often through tears. It can only be valid if - with or without you - I do not say, as Christ does not say, I have no need of you.
