Katherine Jefferts Schori Elected Presiding Bishop

I'm just back from the House of Deputies and then the news conference where Katherine Jefferts Schori was introduced as the new Presiding Bishop-Elect. When her name was announced, there was screaming in the House of Deputies and then silence, as though shock were spreading through the packed hall. The bishops had to remain locked in at Trinity Church until the Deputies had received the election and then Bishop Schori was brought into the House where she addressed the deputies. Following that introduction, she held a press conference where she said "God welcomes all at the table," though did not specify whether that included non-Christians as well (define "all"). She also expressed her support for same sex blessings. "It's happening in the local congregations," she said, "and I support that."

Here's a statement from Martyn Minns:

Canon Martyn Minns, Rector of Truro Church, Fairfax, Virginia has issued this statement as a spokesperson for the American Anglican Council

We are grateful for the clarity that this vote demonstrates. But sad because it seems that Bishop Schori is against everything that Windsor is for.

She voted for Gene Robinson and supports same sex blessings. She will bring into sharp relief the difference between being an Episcopalian and being an Anglican.

It is not clear how she can do anything other than lead The Epispocal Church in walking apart from the rest of the Communion.

She has my prayers
