This is an odd story, I get the impression that the reporter sympathies with TEC but does not want to cut off access to what could be a huge story. There is an undertone of criticism throughout but only one Naughton quote and mostly parishioner quotes, though slight cynical commentary.
I'll be bold and pronounce that this is probably secondary fall-out of TEC media manipulation, that NPR is responding to the shift in other major media, also maybe fears of being cut-out (folks not talking to them but competitors having easy access).
